Efficacy and Safety of Low Frequency Whole-Body Electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) to Improve Health-Related Outcomes in Non-athletic Adults. A Systematic Review

This systematic review evaluates the efficacy and safety of low-frequency whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) in adults who are not active athletes. The authors analysed the results of 23 scientific publications arising from 14 research projects. The review included mainly randomised controlled trials focused on changes in muscle mass, muscle strength, back pain, body composition, physical function and cardio-metabolic risk factors. The results show that EMS significantly increases muscle mass and muscle strength, reduces fat tissue and contributes to the relief of chronic low back pain. The review also suggests a favourable effect on some cardio-metabolic markers, although the authors recommend further research in this area. With correctly adjusted intensity and professional guidance, no significant safety concerns were identified. The authors conclude that WB-EMS represents a safe and effective method, particularly for people who cannot or do not wish to complete conventional strength training.

This work represents one of the most comprehensive reviews of the scientific evidence on WB-EMS. It confirms that, with professionally guided application, WB-EMS can effectively improve muscle mass, strength, body composition and back pain. The results support the use of WB-EMS particularly in people with sedentary lifestyles, older people, or patients who are unable to complete conventional strength training regularly.
