Summary

This randomised controlled trial examined the effect of a six-week whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) programme on the running performance of recreational runners. Twelve men were enrolled and randomly allocated to a WB-EMS group and a control group. Participants in the EMS group completed one WB-EMS session per week for six weeks while reducing the volume of their conventional running training. The control group continued its usual running programme. At the end of the programme, the WB-EMS group showed an improvement in maximum oxygen uptake (VO₂max), aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, running economy and vertical jump height. The results suggest that WB-EMS can be an effective supplement to sports preparation and can help maintain or improve performance even during a temporary reduction in running training volume.
